Families who have children with disabilities desire that their children thrive and become as independent as possible.
Project Independence will partner with you and your child to give you the tools to make that happen.
What is the Program and its purpose?
Project Independence provides 2 strands of six 2-1/2 hour trainings and an all-day college visit to parents/caregivers of children and young adults with disabilities. The trainings occur during a week night from 6:00pm - 8:30pm with the first half-hour for dinner and the remaining 2 hours for training. One strand are for youth ages 14-21 years old and the other strand are for parents. The purpose of this project is for parents to understand their child's educational, developmental and transitional needs; and for youth to have the ability to self-advocate and discover what they would like to do after leaving high school.
Parents and youth will have an increase in knowledge of post high school options and community resources to make them successful with transition. Participants will become advocates and hopefully pay it forward by helping inexperienced families.
Impact to the Community
Project Independence will produce community advocates that will work with systems and stakeholders to better prepare children and youth to lead productive and independent adult lives to the maximum extent through high expectations in education.
